Planet is a spring barley variety, now replacing Propino as the most popular malting barley variety for spring brewing in the UK. Planet has proven to be so versatile that it has become a widely grown cereal variety. In the UK we are fortunate to have probably the best climate for growing barley. Add to this the extreme care taken during the malting process by our malting team and the result is outstanding. Our Pale malt made from Planet malted barley is considered by many to be one of the best spring barley malts available. Planet is high yielding and works very well in the brewhouse. We recommend a mash temperature of at least 65°C as this is the average gelatinisation temperature for this variety. Mashing at a lower temperature may result in slow conversion or even stall as the starch may not fully gelatinise. Planet has a cereal flavour complemented by a slight nuttiness, imparted by its slightly higher attenuation level. It has less of a “masking” effect than Venture or Maris Otter®, which increases the impact of aromatic hops and yeast aromas. This traditional pale malt is ideal for classic top-fermented beers. Suitable for IPAs, bitters, golden ales and pale ales.
